Made with chickpeas, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil, hummus is a great source of plant-based protein and fiber. The chickpeas provide a satisfying base, while tahini adds healthy fats and a smooth, nutty flavor. Fresh garlic gives the hummus a bold and savory taste, while freshly ground black pepper adds a subtle kick. Lemon juice brings brightness and balances the richness of the other ingredients.

This homemade hummus is simple to prepare and can be made in just a few minutes using a food processor or blender. Making it at home also allows you to control the amount of salt, oil, and seasoning. It can be served as a dip with fresh vegetables, spread onto bread or crackers, or paired with eggs and other breakfast foods. For an extra protein boost, it can also be served alongside Greek yogurt or a boiled egg. This versatile spread is creamy, filling, and packed with wholesome ingredients.

The recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tablespoons tahini
  • 1–2 garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2–4 tablespoons cold water, as needed
  • Optional: ½ teaspoon paprika or a pinch of red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. 1Prepare the chickpeas: Drain and rinse the chickpeas thoroughly. For an extra-smooth hummus, remove the skins if desired.
  2. 2Blend the ingredients: Add the chickpeas, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, black pepper, and salt to a food processor or blender.
  3. 3Adjust the texture: Blend until smooth and creamy. Slowly add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until the hummus reaches your preferred consistency.
  4. 4Taste and season: Taste the hummus and add more garlic, lemon juice, or black pepper if desired.
  5. 5Serve: Transfer the hummus to a bowl and drizzle with a small amount of olive oil. Sprinkle with paprika or red pepper flakes for additional flavor.
  6. 6Store: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4–5 days.
